Behind these doors

With the BBC forecasting heavy rain for this afternoon I thought it best to get a Blip in the can early on.

These are the doors of Haddington Sheriff Court and Haddington Police Station.

Some terms you have to be familiar with in case you ever end up behind these doors.

1/ In Glasgow you 'get huckled' by the Police - this term emcompasses the legal caution, the formal notice that you are under arrest and the reason for this. Everyone knows this, including the judiciary, so don't think you are getting off on a technicality.
2/ There's a great piece of common law called 'Breach of the Peace' that is used by the Police to get neds and other desirables off the street. This offence covers actions from threating behaviour to 'looking at me in a funny way'.
3/ In the rest of Scotland you 'get lifted' by the Police. Again this is the all encompassing term.
4/ Many old time Sheriffs are frustrated comedians, so don't be surprised if they tell you that your sentence should be expressed in months rather than years; "you will go to jail for 36 months" for example.
5/ For the Blippers from across the pond in the US you would be amazed at how much of your legal system has been copied from ours; the terminology, the process etc. We just haven't yet succumbed to the excesses of your lawyers - thank goodness...
