Maple leaf and gauls

I had to google what the red things are and they are gauls caused by mites who have been eating the leaf. I don't get why they are red though.
Tried to take a photo of them and ended up with the best photo (this one) having the red bits out of focus but I liked the detail on the leaf. They're quite amazing things really.
