Why basketball?

I have been waiting for the paperback print of this book for quite a while and I finally got a hold of one a the airport bookstore while waiting for my flight back home.

I was born, raised and live in the Philippines but I really don't understand why basketball is our sport of choice. Hopefully this book, written by an American on a one year Fulbright grant here, can enlighten me some.
