Moth or butterfly?

Well, I don't know - it's wings look particularly ragged which may have something to do with the wind we have over here?

What is confusing is that there is apparently no scientific difference between moths and butterflies, except we tend to call the night-flying type moths and reserve the description butterfly for day-flying insects.

The admittedly slightly dated book I have says there are over 120,000 moths and 25,000 known butterflies. Well I've seen 3 of them round my way - anyone else got the rest?
