Clifton Rocks Railway
Another HDR image. Taken on the way back from Bristol airport.
The Clifton Rocks Railway was an underground funicular railway in Bristol, linking Clifton at the top to Hotwells and Bristol Harbour at the bottom of the Avon Gorge in a tunnel cut through the limestone cliffs.
It opened on 11 March 1893, but was never a great success; in 1912 it was sold to Bristol Tramways, but it continued to struggle and closed on 1 October 1934.
Since it closed in 1934, the tunnel is said to have been haunted by the trapped spirits of the men who died building it. For those brave enough to enter it, they are greeted by the eerie sounds of distant wailing and sobbing and a foreboding feeling of doom.
I completely made that last paragraph up.
