Let Glasgow Flourish
Arrived in Glasgow this evening and took a walk round the city centre including the Merchant City.
The three buildings in this photograph are:
Hutchinsons Hall, with one of the founding brothers, George, in his niche. His brother, Thomas, is on the other side.
The Italian Centre, complete with it's statue of Mercury. The award winning design was created from semi derelict warehouses as part of the Merchant city re-development. Based on an Italian palazzo it houses shops, restaurants, bistros, apartments and offices.
City Chambers, which boasts, among other things, one of only two official replicas of the Statue of Liberty which overlooks George Square.
Despite there being 11 statues to the great and the good dotted around George Square there isn't one to George 111 because the merchants of the city refused to fund the project if it included a statue as he had upset them by transferring the major trade in tobacco from Glasgow to the American colonies.
