Sarah's Heaven Day
One year ago today, my stepmom, Sarah, passed away. On paper, her death date is March 16th, but it's really the 15th. She died at 10 PM and the doctor didn't declare her death until after midnight. So her heaven day is really today.
Some of you know I'm an atheist and you might think it's strange that I'm mentioning heaven, but Sarah really believed that she was going to heaven and she would refer to one's death day as their heaven day. I just hope that Sarah got what she wanted -- a chance to see her 13-year-old son again. He was killed 10 or 11 years ago and, obviously, Sarah took it pretty hard. However, she kept getting signs that he was watching over her and my stepbrother. She found dimes in the strangest places, but they were all places that pertained to him. For example, there was a dime on top of his soccer ball in the very back of his bedroom closet. She stored all the dimes she found in a glass box, which was buried with her.
She also loved butterflies. You know the common question, "if you could get reincarnated as any kind of animal, what would you be?" When Sarah's son was still alive, he said that he wanted to be a butterfly because "butterflies are beautiful and no one wants to hurt them." Because of that, Sarah loved butterflies. She had butterfly pins, earrings, necklaces, table ornaments, and pretty much everything else.
I attended day 2 of the film shoot, and we wore these wire color things to identify ourselves from passerbys (as it was an outdoor shoot). Some of us used these things to make shapes and I decided to make a butterfly to honor Sarah.
At one point, when I was walking to the set from our base camp, I opened my wallet and a dime rolled out. The wallet wasn't tipped or anything and I was just walking slowly. As soon as I pulled the zipper, a dime practically jumped out and landed on the ground. I wonder if that meant anything.
After the film shoot, I went downtown and met with Laura and Jason. It was great seeing them again! We ate, walked around, and had a round of drinks. Our waiter (and I use that term very loosely) had a big trashy mullet. I love it.
Rest in peace,
