You Want Meal?
Today was day 1 of the conference I am here in Singapore to attend. It's all about technology within the travel industry - which is what I do. After 2 great days here experiencing the culture (people at work don't listen to this) I thought of not attending the conference. I am actually glad I didn't make that decision - the conference is great.
At 7.30pm I was released from my obligations inside a conference hall that could have been anywhere in the world (aside from the food) and I headed back to the hotel to change down and head out. Back to Chinatown.
What I find very interesting in Singapore is how the cultures or social strata's coexist side by side very comfortably. I went from a catered function for lunch, to a hawkers market for dinner. And to be honest the market was better and cheaper! Like yesterday; a beer at the beach $15, at the market $5. Dinner $5 too ;)
To me, it seems incredibly sad that global chains like McDonald's, Starbucks and others are here. Typically they exist in places like this because the locals "aspire to being like us", or foreigners want/need the familiarity or safety they provide. My response - please keep away, you're helping weaken the local culture .. in my opinion.
Travel is about experiencing and savouring differ cultures. Make the most of it! ;)
p.s I didn't buy a meal here - they were S$8 - outrageous ;)
pps. My friend Kiwidino resigned from blip today. Blip is a commitment and we all struggle I am sure with the work/family/me time to some extent. I'll be here until 365 at least ;-)
