Life in Newburgh on Ythan

An imprisoned Angel

On my way to Stirling, for a couple of days, I took the chance to visit a couple of grave yards associated with bodysnatching, a bizarre interest of mine.

In one of them, I came across this rather rare survivor from Victorian times. Our forebears were wont to decorate their graves with ceramic flowers and figures of doves and angels. The ones consisting of flowers are known as immortelles, after the French word for ever-lasting flowers. To protect them from the elements the objects were usually placed inside a glass dome which itself was protected by an iron cage.

This little weeping angel, imprisoned within its glass dome and ornate iron cage, has survived for well over a century. (You will need to zoomify to see her tears.)
