400th Anniversary - Society of High Constables
Today, while walking down the Royal Mile, we saw these terribly dressed people, so as we do, we stopped a couple to ask why they were so smart and they were more than happy to enlighten us. Turns out that that they had just been to a special event to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Society of High Constables of Edinburgh.
The Society of High Constables of Edinburgh can trace its history back to 1611 when it was formed following an Act of James VI. Today the Society provides a ceremonial role for the City of Edinburgh Council. There is also a separate charity constituted under the name of The Charitable Trust of the Society of High Constables of Edinburgh. The most up to date work on the Society is the History of the High Constables of Edinburgh 2008 which was written by Past Moderator W R Ferguson. The two previous histories are: James David Marwick - 1865 and Robertson - 1924.
