Went through to the Stills Gallery with Instography for a lecture on taking portraits in the sitters environment, can they tell us something about the sitter or is the context dictated by the photogrpaher. Basically it's the latter but ultimately does the commissioner often dictate the agenda using the photographer as a conduit? In commissioned work then aye..... I think so. Debate then ensued about the role of art direction and who is actually responsible for the end work. A good example is when Newsweek sent Arnold Newman to photgraph the Nazi factory owner and slave labour abuser Alfried Krupp, they wanted him demonised and Newman duly delivered.
Anyway on the way up to get a pint I noticed a view that we all pass but certainly I haven't really seen.
