A Very English Shrub

...Privet of course. For me this epitomizes Englishness. The way it nestles round garden fences, its scent - redolent of June evenings. And if you like privet as much as I do, I recommend Michael Frayn's fantastic novel "Spies" where the humble privet plays a central role.
