Silene latifolia

Today's the day ...................... to think of Marie claire

These are the flowers of the white campion Silene latifolia and they always make me think of my friend Marie claire.

She grew up in a rural part of south west France where they were a common plant of the countryside. She showed me how if you pick off the flowers and pinch the open end tightly shut between your fingers, you can make a very loud and satisfying 'pop' noise by stabbing the flower against the back of your wrist.

Not a lot of people know that ...................
