The Electric Brae
The Electric Brae can be located on the coast road approximately 4 miles north of Culzean Castle to the south of Ayr. The text on the stone reads:
"Known locally as "Croy Brae"
"This runs the quarter mile from the bend overloooking Croy railway viaduct in the west (286 feet above ordnance datum) to the wooded Craigencroy Glen (303 feet aod) to the east.
"Whilst there is a slope of 1:86 upwards from the glen, then configuration of the land on either side of the road provides an optical illusion, making it look as if the slope is going the other way.
"Therefore a stationary car on the road with the breaks off will appear to move uphill. The term 'electric' dates from a time when it was incorrectly thought to be a phenomenon caused by electric or magnetic attraction within the brae"
Please DON'T stop on the road to try this out - there's a bend either side of The Electric Brae and it's rather alarming to come across people rolling about in the middle of the road - use the layby please!! :O)
