The Rotunda of St Marija Assunta
The above church which was built between 1833 to 1860 has the third largest unsupported dome in the world! It is situated in Mosta which is in the centre of the island of Malta. On 9th April 1942 an axis bomb pierced the dome of the church but failed to explode. The detonator was removed and a replica bomb is displayed as a memorial. The rotunda was designed by George Grognet de Vasse, a French citizen who lived in Mosta. It took local residents 27 years to build. Today it is a major tourist attraction.
