There's a famous photograph of St Paul's in the second world war, at the height of the blitz, surrounded by falling bombs and ringed in clouds of smoke. The old Wren survived and all around it London continued to change. I caught sight of the famous dome today when I was in town, this time ringed by cranes and construction for the new Blackfriars cross London terminus; surrounded not by destruction but by construction.
For some people there is not much difference, traditionalists in particular bemoaning anything on the capital's skyline that is not classical and scoffing at the gherkin, canary wharf and the razor........ but I like the way things keep changing. If St Paul's could speak it would probably take an avuncular view and welcome the new additions.
