how to take better photographs

tonight at my Women's Institute a local photography tutor gave us a talk on his technical career as a police photographer and his artistic career as a teacher, it was so, so good and I'm very aware I'm a bit of point and shoot blipper and very few in my 300+ photos have much artistic merit....we'll see if that changes with my new inspiration!
