Mueller's Moo Cows

I think Limousins. The calf cannot have been very old and as the rest of the herd were about 100 meters away, the mother seemed to be protecting it as well as sheltering it from the sun - it was very hot & humid and they were both covered in flies.

It's always a pleasure to see & hear this herd of "Suckling cows" (hope this is right - Mutterkuhhaltung in German) which have their pasture about 200 meters away. They don't have bells, probably because they are not Bavarian but that wouldn't worry me either. Rather they are born and spend at least half a year free range than couped up in a shed.

We tend only to hear them when they break out which is not uncommon in late summer and it makes a nice treat for our border collie, Flash, to get the impression that he has helped in rounding them up. Makes a change from the dumb chickens and cantankerous horses. The calves are by then 5 or 6 months old and good for a lark. Due to our total inadequacy in knowing how to train him, he is actually more of a hindrance than a help but he still gets praised for his enthusiastic participation.
