Grey Heron with fish, The Pond, Bonchurch, Isle of
This habituated Grey Heron was fishing at The Pond at Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight. I was with David and Karen Back and their children Daniel and Georgina. The heron who was clearly used to people arrived on the far side of the pond and began to hunt. I have spent many hours watching herons hunting in the Talangama Wetland. So I immediately realized the heron was homing in on a target when it began to adopt strange postures with it head. As this heron prepared to strike I was careful not to take my eyes off the view finder. I fired burst of shots just as it commenced its strike. The image here is a cropped image to show more clearly the fish it caught. It was only later that I realized the Heron was belly deep in the water.
