Final Resting place

I drive past this cemetery every day on my way to work but never really give it a second glance. There are currently roadworks here so I have been stopped looking in most mornings this week. Why do we call it the final resting place? Are we truly resting once we are gone? I like to think that there is a place we go after our time here and so I'm not too sure about the phrase.
