Phi Phi Island
Today was one of the most disturbing tourist experiences of my life.
A day trip to the Thai islands where "The Island" was shot and snorkelling in idyllic locations was our dream. The reality was quite different. The swell was very large and we were in a speed boat with "no life jackets". The boat was crashing around in the water and when I asked about life jackets a few emerged but far less than the number required. At one point we could not even get into the beach.
It was a rushed day with no time to relax and we opted for a large ferry for the 1.5hour trip back to the mainland. Even this large boat was thrashing around in the swell and waves. We thought we saw a person overboard from another boat (along with another tourist) but nothing was done to check in the swell.
If someone did go overboard we all hope that something was done about it, if not then we are also very relieved. Who would know. Hundreds of tourists on boats with no safety briefings and limited safety equipment. Certainly not something to do at this time of the year in this region.
