oak apples
so these are apparently oak apples, which I found in the Ladybank woods, in Fife. According to an encyclopedia, 'An `oak apple` is a mutation of an oak leaf caused by chemicals injected by the larvae of certain kinds of gall wasp.' Well you learn something new everyday.
