Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust.

Usually seen as crystalline sparkly bits in other rocks, this little pebble has been smoothed and polished by thousands of years of rain, wind and waves on the beach of an island in a remote loch in the North West of Scotland. I'll take it back one day, but it sits on my mantlepiece just now, to remind me that there are better places to be and better things to be doing.
