Carmel Mission

There's so many cities in California named after saints (San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica etc.), because first there were mission stations named after saints.

Franciscan friar Junipero Serra from Mallorca, Spain embarked for the missions of Mexico year 1749. Twenty years later he established the Mission in San Diego. Year 1770 he founded the Mission of San Carlos Borromeo near the Carmel River. Nowadays it is known as the Carmel Mission.

Fr. Junipero died in 1784, and his body rests near the altar in Carmel Mission Basilica.
