spittle bugs
No, I didn't hock a loogie on some ants. They were like this when I got there, I swear!
You may have seen spittlebugs before, or at least their frothy spittle. The spittle is part of the plant sap that they've consumed and excreted and, as can be seen here, can help protect the larval froghopper. These ants managed to get stuck.
