"Made Like a Gun"
Royal Enfield are famous as the world's longest surviving motorcycle manufacturer, building their first bike in 1901.
Although U.K. production of motorbikes ceased in 1970 the company had established a factory in India in 1956, in partnership with the Madras Motor Company, to supply the Indian army.
The Indian factory survives & has been exporting motorbikes to the U.K. since 1977. A brand new factory is planned, in Chennai, with the potential to double the company's output.
Less well known are R.E.'s other products, which included lawnmowers, generators & bicycles. Pictured is a "Lightweight Sports" model.
Lightweight? If it fell over a dozen stout yeomen would be required to lift it back onto its wheels!
Incidentally, despite the company's "Made Like a Gun" slogan & canon logo, I don't think they ever actually made firearms. The phrase was meant to imply engineering excellence.
