Pelican Party

Lake Merritt has a year round white pelican who can't fly and who spends most of the year alone. Last year, however, four other white pelicans showed up in the summer, and this year they're back.

I made a quick trip to Lake Merritt this morning and saw our resident pelican (RP) swim away from his usual place on shore. A few minutes later, four white pelicans began circling the wildlife sanctuary. They soon landed near RP, who greeted them with flapping wings and nudges with his beak. They all swam over to RP's usual spot for this gathering. I don't know where these pelicans go when they're not here, but I'm glad our pelican has friends.
