Only One Long Face
Today we took a horse and cart to visit a waterfall out in the countryside.
Whilst the waterfall itself wasn't the amazing spectacle I'd hoped (although still pretty nice) it was the twenty kilometre round trip that proved much more interesting.
Our guide Carlito was funny and friendly, and the trip from roads and villages to fields and dirt tracks was fascinating.
Once at the falls we took our sore behinds and left Carlito with his horse at a nearby ranch, hiking the last leg along the river to the falls.
For me, the most interesting thing was the boy who had seemingly landed his dream job. Relaxing in a small hut by the waterfall he sold bottled water or a delicious cocktail to visiting swimmers and hikers. The cocktail was amazing after the long trip, a sweet affair of rum, honey and lemon. The boy had a permanent smile on his face as he periodically climbed high up to a ledge at the top of the waterfall and dived perfectly into the pool below.
On the way back Carlito sang Cuban songs with Lucy, and even let her take the reigns for most of the journey (including a few dicey moments back on the streets of Trinidad).
Owing to the cart part of our horse and cart being nothing more than a few sheets of wood and metal skillfully welded to a couple of car wheels, our bums are now so bruised it hurts to sit down.
It was another great day of adventure though, and fully worth the pain in the arse.
