Sculpture in the park

These sculptures have been carved by one of the Parks and Garden staff from fallen trees

I like these quite a lot but why has some bright spark thought it was a good idea to put an explanatory sign in the middle of the grass?

And why does the sign only tell you half the story about the air raid the sculptures commemorate?
