A ridiculous man's dream

The All-Russian Exhibition Centre

This was once called the Exhibition of the Achievements of the National Economy.
Behind the building in the background, each of the Soviet Socialist Republics had its own grand pavilion.
One of Yeltsin's first acts was to appropriate the whole show for Russia alone. Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan (and Karelia) managed to keep theirs, but the others have been denamed. One is now a go-karting track.

Now, grandeur and tack compete for pre-eminence in a bizarre, truly post-soviet experience.
