Not today
Happened to spot this young Red Shoulder hawk while out walking my dog today. I dashed back in for my camera and fortunately he was still there when I got back outside.
What I really couldn't believe was that there was a squirrel taunting him not 18 inches away on a branch. If I'm not very much mistaken, these birds EAT squirrels, so I was sure that squirrel would be lunch at any moment. The hawk took it for about a minute, and then flew off to another tree, where I took this picture.
The hawk was chirping, if you could call it that, and looked a little worse for wear on the opposite side from what you can see here, so perhaps he wasn't feeling well, or had gotten scuffed up hunting and catching his lunch earlier in the day. I just know I was stunned that the squirrel lived to tell his buds about the big, tough hawk that he ran off, lol.
