Storm
Much of NZ is in day 4 of a large storm (or series of deep lows and cold fronts).
It's not so bad on the the eastern side with warmer temperatures than usual. But on the west it's cold, wet and in places very snowy.
Last night we experienced some of the most intense thunder and lightning I've experienced. The clap directly overhead was similar to a small quake, only it came from above, not beneath.
Today we headed back to cross the Main Divide through Arthur's Pass. We got through fine in a 4-wheel drive on Friday. Today was different, chains essential for all vechicles.
We turned around and drove to Greymouth. The next pass north - Lewis Pass was reportedly no different, so we bought a set of chains and headed back to Arthur's. It was still chains essential at Otira so fit them we did in a mix of rain, sleet and snow.
We could have gone through without chains but safety comes first and even for a big Toyota Land Cruiser, they're a good addition to have (that's what I told the hunter).
A 3 - 3.5 hour trip took 7. I'm oh so tired.
This panorama is taken from Lake Pearson but looking west towards Arthur's Pass and the worst of the storm. We're forecast for another 4 or 5 days of it.
