wander, stumble, wonder

Elm Hill

The next week flew by. Somehow I suddenly had friends, some found over an early night cup of tea after we made respective excuses (headaches, jetlag) not to hit the town. Classes started, timetables became all clear, and our mental maps of the campus and city slowly improved. I learnt the names of my flatmates, got to know new friends, discovered common likes, and through networks met more and more people.

Then it was almost the weekend again. On a Friday afternoon a group of us went into the city to wander again. We explored the shelves of a beautiful old second hand bookshop, admired the beautiful cathedral, mosied up Elm Hill and ended up in a quaint old cafe. Later we realised we'd just seen half the set of Stardust which was fairly exciting.

This street was one of my favourites in the town. It used to be the rough quarters, largely occupied by weavers, dyers and other craftspeople. There used to be many of these streets, all woven together, but they were destroyed in a campaign to modernise. This one was saved through campaigning for it's historic value. Now it's in the more expensive area, near the cathedral and full of boutiquey shops.

I always wondered at the girls who staggered up this old cobblestone lanes in heels. How do they do it? I struggled in my deeply sensible shoes.

More of these and other explorations of Norfolk here.
