Linnet in danger of getting a soaking

The mystery of the bird on the beach has been solved. After much help on twitter from Mike Kyne-Phillips and the RSPB forum, my little friend is a Linnet. This a female which are more sombrely coloured but I have seen the characteristic red flash of the male, but not tonight unfortunately.
