Remembrance
In July the fields of Northern France are awash with red poppies. For someone of my generation, introduced to the books and poems of the First World War by teachers who had themselves fought in the trenches, the poppy is a very powerful symbol. This one has been painted on a fragment of a rum jar, picked up, North of here, on the Somme where, in July 1916, a most bloody battle was fought.
