No, contrary to popular belief, kale is not merely animal food. There's even a variety called "Hungry gap" as kale is winter hardy and gives a continuous supply of green veggies when little else is available.
You can use it, maybe minus midribs, as a winter substitute for "Spring greens", or as them over there call them Collard greens. They also are an irreplaceable ingredient in broth.

O.K. why puddle 'em in? Them as knows will tell you to put a collar around the stem to keep cabbage root fly off. This is a lot less hassle, you don't have to faff with collars, the "puddle" creates a reservoir for the young roots and the mud collar sets hard and keeps the wee grubs from digging down to the roots. I've never seen a transplant flag in the driest of weather.
