Feet don't get dirty for no reason!
To say the least today has been interesting...
This morning the kids were all out on camping trips and the head staff were all in camp. I was sitting reading up on Liverpool FC, when Will-O walks in and asks for an opinion. "Is that smoke rolling over the ridge?" He asks. I look at the ridge and most definitely smoke on the horizon. We immediately go to our boss and tell him "Should I mount up?" Will asks (referring to mounting a horse and exploring) and I ask if I should grab a vehicle and go look.
Mike thinks briefly and says yes...
Falcon and I take off in a van and start driving up to where we think the smoke is coming from. When the trees part and the visual becomes clear, there it is, smoke rising into the sky from a group of trees just past where we have vespers. We arrive after already calling and saying we will need people, and the diameter of the fire is roughly 50m. Falcon and I stand there and examine the scene because we have no tools to fight the fire. After about 8 minutes a slew of people show up with a fire truck, tools, and man power. We fight the fire for roughly 30 minutes before the fire department show up with the forest service...
After a conversation with the forest service they inform the 15-20 staff that are there we are not needed, there are professionals there. We were fighting this thing forever, covered in sut, smoke, dirt, and sweat. I got my leg hair burned off and the forest service tells us that we aren't needed? I am sorry, but when there is a group of us out there trying to protect our homes, don't just say "You aren't needed" anymore...
Everyone is safe, the fire is contained, and we all need a shower...but this is my life and no day is the same. I never thought I would be a fireman when I woke up this morning, I guess thats what happens when I live out here...
Go appreciate the outdoors and stop browsing the internet, I know I certainly am!
