Free Water
Free spring water to be precise - today was dryer in most ways than yesterday, but still had a water theme.
We visited Poole's Cavern in Buxton to see the source of the River Wye and some stunning stalactites and stalagmites - the boys were asking the poor guide far too many questions - some of which seemed to stump him 'whats the difference between a cave and a cavern?' was a starter 'are there any bears in the cavern?' and one of my faves (after he'd learnt the 'I'll answer your question when I've finished talking' response) was when he was talking about the final feature - a large lump of rock that was now covered in sparkly white calcite and named 'The Sculpture' after Henry Moore - he explained that Henry Moore had died and eldest wanted to know if he was inside this huge magical rock - poor man, but we managed to stretch our supposed 40 minute tour out to almost an hour so good value for money in many ways.
After that we popped into Buxton - a town with some lovely bits, but struggling it seems with lots of empty units on the high street - and perhaps confused between being a modern town, a tourist attraction and at one point in its life quite luxurious.
This is the point opposite the Baths where you can get free spring water - we had to queue behind a few people - including a man with two huge water bottles he was refilling and carrying off - its also quite strange as its slightly warm as it comes out. It did seem slightly bizarre in this H&S mad age that we are 'allowed' to just drink it as it comes without huge signs of warning or some secret treatment going on behind the scenes.
An day rounded off with with the worlds worst disposable BBQ (that I would not be beaten by) and bed
