Nurse! The Screen!

The screen & gateway to Syon House was designed by Robert Adam, & built in 1773. Horace Walpole witnessed the construction, but didn't like what he saw.
Nikolaus Pevsner, however, describes it as "a most delicate, spirited composition".
It was repaired in 1799, again in 1814, & has clearly undergone further work more recently.
The prevailing attitude when it comes to the restoration of old buildings seems to be to conserve the original fabric where possible, but clearly sections of the screen were beyond saving.
I rather like the contrast between the old & the new. If I were in a more poetic frame of mind I'd try to say something allegorical about building on past experience, but right now I need to go & do the washing-up.
