Mihalis Kakoyiannis RIP
This is a frame from Attila '74 Kakoyiannis's brilliant [and only] documentary.
Kakoyiannis who died on Monday aged 89 was a Greek-Cypriot film-maker most famous for directing Zorba the Greek. In 1974 while in exile from the fascist military Junta in Greece, where he had established himself as a film director, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place. He took a small team to Cyprus and documented events there. His fame as a film-maker opened many doors and he managed to get excellent interviews with the main players.
He also interviews many refugees including children and those waiting for their 'missing' relatives. It's quite heart-breaking at times and reminds me of watching these events unfold on TV as a child with my family.
