In The Occupied Territory

Down by the river

There are two rivers in Aberdeen, The Dee and The Don. They both enter the sea only a mile or so apart. This has the effect of causing hellish traffic problems. The River Don has only 2 public, vehicular bridges over it, the area that these two bridges effectively give access to is actually called the Bridge of Don. One of the bridges that cross the river is actually the Bridge of Don, whilst just before you cross it is one of those Beefeater places, that also bears that name , albeit in the local language, E.G. The Brig of Don.
Confused?
The other bridge is called, well actually it doesn't really have a name, but most folk refer to it as The Muggiemoss Bridge. or The Persley Bridge.
The area that is The Bridge of Don is, reputedly, the largest housing estate in Europe. It costs as much for a taxi from the city centre to the bridge called Bridge of Don, as it does from the bridge to the farthest reaches of the estate.
There are also 2 pedestrian bridges over the river, one called the Brig O' Balgownie, which was allegedly built in the 1300-1400, and started, or at least funded by King Robert The
Bruce, the other is this one, does not have a name. but a few hundred yards along the river from it is a private bridge named The Grandholm Bridge, which takes you into the part of the city called, funnily enough, Grandholm, which is part of the Bridge of Don (area), and, before it was built as a housing developement, was actually a factory or Grandholm Mill, as it was known as.
Still confused?
Yeah, don't blame you; as the area is also sub-divided into, Ashwood, Jesmond, Danestone, Dubford, Denmore, Balgownie, Grandholm and a 3 part indusrtrial estate, one of which holds, every 2 years, Europe's biggest Oil and Gas conference and exhibition; This takes place in September, and this year's one will no doubt, be bigger than the last one, As it always has been.
