No, this guy isn't trying to stop me from taking his photo, although I was close enough for him to feel me breathing down his neck. Suntans are still a bad thing for many in Japan, so at the first sign of sunlight a lot of the older generation will use whatever they have at hand to fend of the evil rays. This guy looks quite sensible with his fan, but people will use anything: bags, books, magazines, handkerchiefs, fliers, scrap paper from their bag, their hand... There's also the old ladies with arm-length gloves and Darth Vader masks, but I'll keep that tale for another day.
