Beautiful Borders

The gardens at Portmore House were open today through Scotland?s Gardens Scheme. We had been twice before but not for a few years and were interested to see what head gardener Ken Kennedy had been up to.

What he has been up to is lots of hard work! The woodland pond that looked relatively new last time has matured. The mix of formal and informal is wonderful, and the sheer perfection of some of the blooms in the hothouses is incredible.

But if there is a favourite feature for me it is the magnificence of the herbaceous borders. The harmonious choice of colours, the symmetry and scale all display the hand of a master gardener.

There was of course a plant sale and madame succumbed to the sales pitch and we left with three excellent specimens.

I think Portmore is one of the finest gardens I have visited in Scotland.
