Dr. J's Day

By JaniceNgan

Dale, OR to Susanville, CA

We had a glorious sleep in (there's nothing like sleeping under the stars in the middle of the forest in a tent with no fly on). For breakfast #1 we had the worst coffee in the world - Pamba - not unlike warm brown water. Slim pickin's at the Dale general store...if you ever are in desperate need of coffee and had the option of "Pamba" vs. water, I would definitely choose water. We also had the worst instant plain oatmeal - mealy and mushy and just all around yeee-uck! But that's what we get when we don't plan ahead and pack for our off the cuff road trip.

Well, we hit road by 10am and promptly searched for breakfast #2. We got a coffee (which was only marginally better than the Pamba) and a breakfast sandwich in Long Creek, OR. Kept on driving south on the 395 and stopped off for lunch about 3 hours later at Ye Olde Castle in Burns, OR.

Jer just kept driving and driving and driving and we stopped at Lake Abert and got some good pics. We also saw the Old Perpetual Geyser by Lakeview, OR - it was so subtle and hidden that we almost missed it. We also stopped at this cute, kitschy Tree of Shoes in between Madeline and Termo, OR.

We had no idea how vast Oregon is. After what seemed like forever, we finally got into California. We stayed at the Apple Inn in Susanville, CA. We got coupons for the Diamond Mountain Casino, and our options were limited, so we decided to take advantage of the deals that were at hand. We had a terrible dinner and then played our $5 free slots (which I managed to lose in about 30 seconds). About a minute later we went to the blackjack table and I managed to win enough for the both of us to keep playing for about 20 minutes. We were in the casino for so long that we managed to miss the 4th of July fireworks :/
