Kids, Goats and Other Adventures
AB picked us up just before midday and took us to LCC- Limuru Children's Centre saying 'I just have to go into Limuru, I'll be back in a couple hours'.
So we chatted to kids and helped sort beans and corn and met some other volunteers who were there. Had a bit of lunch, did a lot of skipping... Teacher Abi was there, it was lovely to see her, i spent a lot of time in her class last year at LCC-K, the pre-school branch of LCC.
The hours came and went, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm... eventually around 5.30 AB returned. He'd been to Jikaze and bought a goat.
Now to fully understand just how funny this is i must take you back to Friday night, whilst we were eating he was telling us how on Saturday night he was going to Patrick's Mum's (the lady who started LCC in the beginning) for dinner and he was wondering what to take her as a gift. On the phone to Patrick he started at 'shall i bring her some flowers' and ended with 'I'll get her a goat'. In fact he got her two (and two for LCC, he went on a bit of a goat spree) though he only brought one back right away, tied and wrapped in the boot, bleating at every bump they hit on the road.
Anyway, we took two girls, Susan and Theresea home to their grandparents house where they live. They walk the several miles to LCC everyday in the holidays to be fed. Susan had spent half the afternoon trying to teach us some Swahili. G just could not get the right answer to any of the simple greetings she was trying to teach him and she couldn't speak enough English to explain herself so he got totally confused and she totally frustrated. Luckily i already knew it though i got fairly told off for mouthing the answers to him!
You had to go down the highway and turn off down a track over this field to get to their house, but there'd been a bad accident and there was a massive queue so we went cross country with just the girls through Elizabeth (an older girl who came to translate) telling AB where to drive to avoid the big holes and ditches.
Then in the evening AB invited us to go with him as he was meant to bring 2 people and hadn't found anyone who was free. So we went along and were fed and met the goat (who is very cute and white and has a great beard.)
So what with kids and Swahili lessons and goats and crazy driving and visiting homes we had a fairly eventful day... Gareth's been fairly thrown into it, i'm sure i was let in much more gently last time but hey. We love it!
