It's a book and a film, one word, one syllable
I just spent a couple of joyous hours watching 'Z' a film I've always loved but only just now got on DVD.
The picture above is of the book, written earlier, but this edition includes stills from the film.
The film opens with these lines:
Any resemblance to actual events, to persons living or dead, is not the result of chance. It is DELIBERATE.
It's based on a true story before the military junta took over in Greece but at a time when things were getting hairy for the left and peace groups and the police were not only corrupt but in league with fascist organisations.
The film was made in French and shot in Algeria [which does occasionally look like Thessalonika] and starred Yves Montand, basically because the military junta had taken over Greece by this time.
It was directed by Costa Gavras who was nominated for best Director at the Oscars that year. He went on to win an Oscar for Missing, another political thriller, starring Jack Lemmon.
