Compositition Number 403 - Kelly's Cats

The Battle of Harlaw took place in 1411 and resulted from a feud between the Clan MacDonald and the Stewart royal family.
The monument to the battle was erected in 1911 at which time the Battle of Culloden was still a raw sore in Scots history, leading to disagreement regarding which clan's coats of arms should be commemorated on the monument. As a result the monument was only completed some 2 weeks ago.
The architect was William Kelly (1861-1944). His first design was the Aberdeen Savings Bank on Union Terrace, but he is best remembered for 'Kelly's Cats' - the diminutive leopards on the extended Union Bridge parapet of 1905.
