"Feeling Disorientated"
We had a bit of a crisis at 5.30am this morning! Mrs OE couldn't sleep so got up to make a cuppa and as usual sleepy Bracken always rises to greet you and then quickly goes straight back to his bed as he is not an early riser. He then started to catch his breath which has happened several times before but only lasts a few seconds and then he recovers with a bit of reassurance but this time he looked in a panic and it went on about 15 mins on and off by which time we looked very distressed. Mr OE rang the emergency Vet straight away and she said come straight down to the surgery we need to investigate this urgently. By 6.30am Bracken was on the table being examined by a very nice young lady Vet by which time the attacks had ceased which is typical.
We decided on the advice of the Vet to have a thorough investigation done with cameras which showed absolutely nothing untoward which put our minds at rest and at the moment she thinks it is what they call a reversed sneezing attack which is quite common in certain breeds although not in Borders (she has a Border Terrier herself). What worried us at one point was that Bracken appeared to stop breathing for a very short time!!!! Anyway its just the effects of the anaesthetic which is making him a bit quiet tonight, and he has painkillers and antibiotics as she said with all the pipes being put down his throat and up his nose he will be a bit sore! He is booked to see her this Thursday for another check up and she will show us what to do if and when he has another attack. It was very frightening to say the least when you are not quite sure how to help an animal in distress as his eyes appeared to be fixed on Mr OE saying HELP whilst his little tail was wagging like mad. We thought he might have a collapsed trachea which is very serious! The Vet doesn't think so thank goodness, and will explain everything in detail Thursday when he is checked. Unfortunately when we collected him tonight she had gone off duty and so only got certain information from the Nurse.
Anyway hopefully we will have a good night's sleep (may be he will want to sleep upstairs with us) he doesn't normally but we are all very tired so whatever it takes we will do.
I am sure many of you blippers with small dogs have experienced similar problems, and they do say put your fingers over the nostrils to make them breath properly but that never worked this morning so the Vet will show us a trick with a spatula (sounds very interesting I will have to report on it).
Can't get used to him being so quiet but no doubt by tomorrow he will bounce back to his old self again.
