Thistles

I don't really know what this large prickly thing is.

I walk past it most days and marvel as it springs forth like a phoenix from the flames each spring grows to a prickly 6 feet high and then produces magnificent thistle heads and then these seed cases.

Any ideas?

Another grey and rainy day in Yorkshire, but muggy.
