That Will Do!

Calton Hill

From Jeffrey Street three of the buildings align quite nicely.

On the left is the sustantial house of the Governor of the old Calton Gaol, built in 1817 and is all that remains of that building, St Andrew's House was built over the site.

In the middle is the iconic Monument to philosopher Dugald Stewart, designed by William Playfair and built in 1831; this appears on most photographs from Calton Hill overlooking Princes Street and is surely recognised the world over.

To the right is Old Observatory House. Built between 1776 and 1793, and once inhabited by, New Town architect James Craig for Thomas Short, an Edinburgh-born optician, it was the first Observatory on Calton Hill and used until 1818, when Playfair built the Old City Observatory nearby. It continued as family home during that time. Very few buildings remain that were actually built by James Craig and this is regarded as the most outstanding.
